Japan-Indonesia Summit Meeting (Summary)

On December 16, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Japan-Indonesia Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, who is visiting Japan to participate in the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, followed by a ceremony for the exchange of signed notes between the two countries. The overview of the meeting and ceremony is as follows.
 
The meeting and ceremony were also attended on the Japanese side by Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. SAITO Ken, Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry, Mr. MURAI Hideki, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary, among others; and on the Indonesian side by H.E. Ms. Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Ir. Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, H.E. Dr. Ir. Pramono Anung, Cabinet Secretary, H.E. Ir. Arifin Tasrif, Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources, among others.
 
1. Summit Meeting
(1) Introduction
Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for President Joko’s visit to Japan, and his sympathy for the damage caused by the eruption of Mt. Marapi earlier this month. Prime Minister Kishida also welcomed the substantial conclusion of the negotiations for the amendments of the Japan-Indonesia EPA and a Joint Ministerial Statement issued by both Foreign Minister Kamikawa and Minister of Trade Zulkifli. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that, as the world is at a historical turning point, Japan places great importance on promoting cooperation with ASEAN, including Indonesia, to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law and to ensure a world where human dignity is protected. Prime Minister Kishida expressed his hope that the Commemorative Summit would become an opportunity to pass on to the next generation the "trust" which Japan and ASEAN have built thus far, and to further strengthen the relations between Japan and ASEAN. In response, President Joko appreciated that he was welcomed by the Japanese side on his visit and welcomed the substantial conclusion of the negotiations for the amendments of the Japan-Indonesia EPA. President Joko also stated that he would like to continue to work with Prime Minister Kishida to further develop Japan-Indonesia relations under a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
 
(2) Bilateral Relations
Prime Minister Kishida welcomed the signing of notes for the provision of a large patrol vessel for the Indonesian Coast Guard (BAKAMLA).
Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan would like to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in the field of energy transition and decarbonization through the "Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC)" initiative and the Just Energy Transition Partnership, as well as to steadily support infrastructure development including the North-South Line and East-West Line of the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit Project, and expressed Japan’s support for the early initiation of Indonesia’s accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In response, President Joko expressed his appreciation for Japan's cooperation to date and his desire to further promote cooperation with Japan in these areas.
 
(3) Responding to regional and international challenges
The two leaders also exchanged views on various regional and international issues, and confirmed that they would continue to work together.
