Japan-Türkiye Summit Meeting (Summary)

On December 1st, commencing at 17:10 p.m. local time (22:10 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who was visiting Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to attend COP28 “United Nations World Climate Action Summit,” held Japan-Türkiye Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN, President of the Republic of Türkiye. The overview is as follows.

1. With regard to the situation surrounding the Gaza Strip, President Erdoğan expressed concern over the grave humanitarian situation and stressed the importance of maintaining the pause in fighting.

2. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan had welcomed the pause in fighting, the release of the hostages, and the increased delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, but it was regrettable that the fighting had recently resumed and that it is important that the parties concerned come back to the agreement and the situation will be calmed down as soon as possible. Furthermore, he stated that all parties concerned need to comply with international law, including international humanitarian law, and that during actual military operations all possible measures need to be taken in order to prevent damage on civilians.

3. The two leaders confirmed that the two countries will continue to work together toward improving the humanitarian conditions and calming down the situation.

4. Furthermore, the two leaders concurred on further developing the bilateral relations under their leadership in various areas including economy, energy, and tourism toward next year’s centennial anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
