Prime Minister Kishida's acceptance of Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Award (Summary)

On September 20, commencing at 7:30 p.m. (local time, 8:30 a.m. on September 21, Japan time), for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan,who is visiting New York, U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly, attended the Atlantic Council’s "Global Citizenship Awards’ annual gala." Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs, also attended this event.
  2. The event was held in a friendly atmosphere. Prime Minister Kishida received a “Global Citizen Award”along with H.E. Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, and Honourable Janet Yellen, U.S. Treasury Secretary.
  3. Prime Minister Kishida, upon introduction from H.E. Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, touched upon his hosting the G7 summit in Hiroshima, a symbol itself of the pledge of peace, and emphasized the importance of the opportunity in which the G7 leaders and other leaders learned first-hand the reality of the atomic bombing as well as his commitment to take the lead to achieve peace.

The Atlantic Council is a U.S. think tank established in 1961 as the predecessor of the Atlantic Treaty Association, which was founded in 1954 to promote understanding of peace and security among the member states of the North Atlantic Treaty.

The Global Citizenship Awards are presented by the Atlantic Council to individuals who have contributed to the development of politics, economics, culture, etc. on a global scale. Past recipients include the former Prime Minister Abe, OGATA Sadako, former President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, conductor OZAWA Seiji, Indonesian President Jokowi, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, and the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Blair, and former Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew and others.
