Japan-Iran Summit Meeting (Summary)

On September 20, commencing at 9:50 a.m. (local time; September 20, 22:50 p.m. JST) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly session, held a Japan-Iran summit meeting with H.E. Ayatollah Seyyed Ebrahim RAISI, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan will continue its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East region based on the historically friendly relationship between Japan and Iran. In response, President Raisi stated that he seeks to expand the bilateral relationship between Japan and Iran in various fields.
2. The two leaders exchanged candid views on the situation surrounding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan has been consistent in its support for the JCPOA and called on Iran to take constructive measures including the full and unconditional implementation of the Joint Statement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The two leaders concurred to continue close communication on the matter.
3. Prime Minister Kishida explained Japan’s position on the recent dischage of ALPS treated water into the sea referring to the IAEA’s assessment in its Comprehensive Report, and the two leaders exchanged views on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as the situation in the Middle East and East Asia.
4. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida emphasized the importance of ensuring maritime security and the safety of navigation and explained Japan’s efforts in the field. In response, President Raisi stated the importance of securing the safety of navigation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
