Japan-Netherlands Summit Meeting (Summary)

On September 9, commencing at 1:32 p.m. (local time; 5:02 pm JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who was visiting India to attend the G20 Summit, New Deli, India, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Mark RUTTE, Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his pleasure to have a summit meeting with Prime Minister Rutte for the first time. Touching upon the fact that the year 2025 will mark the 425th anniversary of exchange between Japan and the Netherlands, he also stated that he would like to further strengthen cooperation in various areas including security with the Netherlands, a strategic partner which shares values and principles with Japan, in maintaining and strengthening the free and open international order based on the rule of law.
2. Prime Minister Kishida stated that the discharge of ALPS treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the sea is concluded by the IAEA in its comprehensive report to have negligible radiological impact on humans and the environment, and that he would continue to carefully explain this to the international community based on scientific evidence and with a high level of transparency. Prime Minister Rutte expressed his full support to Japan’s approach.
3. The two leaders exchanged views on the response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, regional affairs including China and North Korea, and concurred on continuing to coordinate in dealing with North Korea, including nuclear and missiles issues as well as the abductions issue, among others.
