On July 4, commencing at around 4:10 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Prime Minister Kishida welcomed Director General Grossi's visit to Japan and expressed his appreciation for the activities and efforts of Director General Grossi and the IAEA regarding the ALPS treated water. Prime Minister Kishida stated that as a leader bearing responsibility to the international community, he would never approve any discharge that has adverse impacts on the health of the people of Japan and the world as well as environment, and will continue to provide detailed explanations based on scientific evidence in a highly transparent manner both domestically and internationally. In response, Director General Grossi presented the report to Prime Minister Kishida, stating that the comprehensive report on the safety of ALPS treated water that he had just brought to Japan was scientific and neutral, and contained the elements necessary for the Japanese government to move forward to the next stage.
- Prime Minister Kishida expressed his high regard for the efforts of Director General Grossi to ensure nuclear safety and security in Ukraine. He also stated that Japan supports five principles regarding the ZNPP and that the G7 Presidency will continue to work closely with him.
- Both sides also agreed to continue to work closely together on nuclear issues in Iran and North Korea and on the promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
