Video Conference Meeting with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong of Vietnam (Summary)
On February 9, commencing at 4:45 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit video teleconference meeting with H.E. Dr. Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. The summary of the meeting is as follows.
1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida extended greetings for the Vietnamese New Year and expressed his pleasure at the opportunity to meet with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam’s top leader, on this historic occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Viet Nam and the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. In response, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong expressed his desire to work with Prime Minister Kishida for further development of Japan-Viet Nam relations.
2. Appreciating how the two countries have cooperated with each other over the past 50 years to build the current positive relations, the two leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relations to a higher level for the next 50 years, thereby developing Japan-Viet Nam relations together, especially by strengthening cooperation in the areas of economy and economic cooperation such as investment, GX (Green Transformation) and DX (Digital Transformation), as well as on political and security fronts.
3. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international affairs. Prime Minister Kishida explained Japan’s new National Security Strategy and expressed his desire to further strengthen cooperation with Viet Nam. In response, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong offered his support for Japan’s playing a greater role in the region and the international community. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Viet Nam is an important partner that plays a key role in realizing a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific," and expressed his desire to continue to cooperate with Vietnam regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the East and South China Seas, and dealing with North Korea, including on the nuclear and missile issues, and the abductions issue, and the two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation on various strategic issues.
