Japan-Italy Summit Telephone Talk

On November 2, commencing at 6:10 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Ms. Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Kishida congratulated the Prime Minister Meloni on her appointment as President of the Council of Ministers of Italian Republic and stated that he would like to work with her to further collaborate with Italy as an important G7 partner. Prime Minister Meloni stated that she looked forward to working closely with Japan in both bilateral and international cooperation.

2. Prime Minister Kishida welcomed that Prime Minister Meloni had made it clear that Italy would continue to provide full support to Ukraine and the two leaders confirmed the need to maintain the unity of the international community and maintain and strengthen sanctions against Russia as well as support for Ukraine. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons is absolutely unacceptable, nor should its use be allowed, and that it is essential for the international community to send a clear message. He also stated that the Russia’s false allegations about "dirty bombs" are also unacceptable. Both leaders confirmed that they would continue to work together in this regard. They also exchanged views on situations concerning North Korea, including the abductions issue, as well as China.

3. Prime Minister Kishida welcomed Italy’s policy of contributing to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Both leaders confirmed that they would continue to work closely together in various fora, including the G7, which will be hosted by Japan next year and Italy the year after.
