Japan-U.S. Summit Telephone Meeting

 
On October 4, commencing at 10:45 p.m., for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone meeting with the Honorable Joseph R. Biden, Jr., President of the United States of America. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
 
1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his sympathy for the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian. In response, President Biden expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Kishida’s warm words.
 
2. The two leaders strongly condemned North Korea's missile launch that flew over Japan for the first time in approximately five years as a serious and imminent threat to the national security of Japan and a clear and serious challenge to the international community. This took place in the wake of an unprecedented frequency of four launches in a week last week. The two leaders concurred to continue close coordination between Japan and the U.S. as well as among Japan, the U.S., and the ROK toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida asked for continued understanding and cooperation for the resolution of the abductions issue, and gained full support from President Biden.
 
3. Prime Minister Kishida reiterated his determination to fundamentally reinforce Japan’s defense capabilities, and the two leaders shared the view to promote related efforts including the strengthening of the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance and cooperation among Japan, the U.S., and the ROK.
 
4. The two leaders concurred to continue close coordination and cooperation to defend the peace and stability of Japan and the region.
