Meeting Between Prime Minister Kishida and Former President of France Sarkozy

On September 27, commencing at around 11:10 a.m., Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, Former President of the French Republic, who was visiting Japan to attend the state funeral for former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo, for approximately 15 minutes. A summary of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for the attendance by former President Sarkozy at the state funeral for former Prime Minister Abe. He stated that the relationship of trust built between successive leaders including former President Sarkozy had considerably contributed to the development of relations between Japan and France and that he hoped to further strengthen their close coordination as exceptional partners. In response, former President Sarkozy expressed his deep condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe and stated that the entire French nation was shocked and that France attached immense importance to the relations with Japan. He also expressed his hope to further deepen cooperation with Japan in a wide range of fields.

2. Both leaders also exchanged views on the regional issues and Prime Minister Kishida stated that the security of Europe and Indo-Pacific is inseparable. They confirmed that the unity among like-minded countries in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continued to be important and shared the view on the importance of close coordination between Japan and France, sharing the fundamental values.

3. Both leaders also confirmed that they would continue to work closely on the various challenges of the international community, including the reform of the United Nations.
