Japan-Iran Summit Meeting

On September 21, commencing at 14:30 p.m. (local time; on September 22, 3:30 JST) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly session, held a Japan-Iran summit meeting with H.E. Ayatollah Seyyed Ebrahim RAISI, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratidude for the letter of condolence from President Raisi on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe, and expressed his intention to cooperate towards the further strengthening of the historically friendly relationship between Japan and Iran. In response, President Raisi once again offered his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe, and stated that he seeks to expand the bilateral relationship between Japan and Iran in various fields.

2. The leaders exchanged candid views based on the recent situation on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan has been consistent in its support for the JCPOA and expressed his hopes for the early return to compliance with the JCPOA by relevant countries. Both sides agreed to continue close communication on this matter.

3. The leaders exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East including Yemen and Ukraine.

4. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida emphasized the importance of ensuring maritime security and the safety of navigation and explained Japan’s efforts in the field. The leaders concurred to maintain communication on this matter.
