Japan-Turkey Summit Meeting

On September 20, commencing at 4:45 p.m. (local time; on September 21, at 3:45 a.m. Japan time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN, President of the Republic of Turkey, in New York during his visit to attend the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, President ERDOĞAN expressed his deepest condolences for the passing of former Prime Minister ABE and stated that he was pleased to be able to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Kishida in person on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly.
- The two leaders exchanged views on regional affairs. Prime Minister Kishida strongly condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine as an outrageous act that violates respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and shakes the very foundation of the international order, and as a serious challenge to the rule of law. He stated that any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo by force will not be tolerated in any region.
- Prime Minister Kishida expressed his respect for Turkey's persistent diplomatic efforts in establishing a joint coordination center in Istanbul through the four-party talks with the United Nations, Ukraine, and Russia, which resulted in the realization of grain export from Ukraine amid the world food crisis, as well as for Turkey’s undertakings based on its close relationship with both Russia and Ukraine.
- The two leaders concurred to accelerate discussions toward an early conclusion of the Japan-Turkey Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations.
- They agreed to continue to develop bilateral relations on various fields, including energy, space and education, under their leadership.
