Japan-Senegal Summit Video Conference Meeting

On August 27, commencing at 7:25 p.m. (Japan Time) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit video teleconference meeting with H.E. Mr. Macky SALL, President of the Republic of Senegal, who is visiting Tunisia to attend the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
 
1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida told President Sall, who chairs the African Union (AU), that he regretted he would not be able to participate in the meeting in person, but that he hoped to lead TICAD 8 to a success with the cooperation of President Sall, who co-chairs the meeting. President Sall conveyed his condolence to former Prime Minister Abe and stated that he highly appreciated Japan's contribution through TICAD, while welcoming the second TICAD in Africa. He then expressed that he would do his utmost to ensure the success of TICAD 8.
 
2. Prime Minister Kishida commended the progress of cooperation between Japan and Senegal in a wide range of areas, including fisheries and education, and informed that Japan intends to provide yen loans to support the development of the education sector. Moreover, Prime Minister Kishida welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation to establish the Joint Crediting Mechanism for decarbonization. In response, President Sall expressed his appreciation for Japan's extensive support for the development of Senegal, and welcomed private-sector investment from Japan. Both leaders confirmed to work for further development of bilateral relations based on the outcome of TICAD 8.
 
3. Prime Minister Kishida then stated that it is essential for the international community to cooperate in its response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, and that Japan intends to continue contributing to strengthening food security in Africa. Prime Minister Kishida also raised the importance of transparency and fairness of development finance and the two sides confirmed to cooperate with each other.
 
4. Furthermore, the two sides shared the view to continue to work together in responding to regional and international issues, such as North Korea, including on the nuclear, missile, and abductions issues and strengthening of the functions of the United Nations as a whole, including the Security Council reform. They also confirmed to coordinate to maintain and strengthen the NPT regime following the recent NPT Review Conference.
