Japan-Tunisia Summit Video Conference Meeting

On August 26, commencing at around 7:30 p.m. (Japan Time) for approximately 50 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a video conference with H.E.Mr. Kais Saied, President of the Republic of Tunisia. The overview is as follows:
 
1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he hopes to make TICAD 8 a success by cooperating with President Saied. President Saied stated that he would make best effort for the success of TICAD 8.
 
2. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan is following closely the political and economic reforms that Tunisia is undertaking, and is expecting that the National Elections this December will be held in an appropriate manner with broad public support. Prime Minister Kishida then stated that Japan intends to extend a loan of 12 billion yen to the Tunisian “Project for Support to Strengthen the Social Protection,” and will continue to strengthen the bilateral relationship, including through economic cooperation and financial support. In response, President Saied stated that he also strongly hopes that the elections will be held successfully and expressed his deep appreciation for the aforementioned loan, along with Japan’s support and investment so far.   
 
3. Prime Minister Kishida then stated that Russia's aggression against Ukraine shakes the very foundations of the international order and that it is essential for the international community to cooperate in their response. The two leaders concurred on the importance of early resolution of the issue.
 
4. Furthermore, the two leaders exchanged views on regional situations as well as international issues such as nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and concurred on two countries working together in dealing with those issues.
