Japan-UK Summit Telephone Talk

On July 13, commencing at 6:07 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with the Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Prime Minister Johnson expressed his deep condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe and stated that former Prime Minister Abe was a great figure and a true friend to the UK who created the foundations of the current excellent Japan-UK relationship.

2. In response, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Johnson’s remarks and stated that he was strongly shocked and felt anger at the loss of life due to unreasonable violence in the midst of an election, the very foundation of democracy. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that as the incumbent Prime Minister, he would not give in to violence and would defend democracy, and strive to further strengthen the Japan-UK relationship, carrying on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe.
