Japan-Australia Summit Telephone Meeting

On July 12, commencing at 3:12 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan held a summit telephone meeting with the Hon. Anthony Albanese, MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Prime Minister Albanese expressed his sincere condolences to the passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on behalf of the Australian people. Prime Minister Albanese stated that city landmarks were lighting up in the colors of the Japanese flag throughout Australia, including Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne in tribute to former Prime Minister Abe's unwavering commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific and regional security.

2. In response, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Albanese's remarks, and stated that he cannot allow unreasonable violence that occured in the midst of the election, which is the very foundation of democracy. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that as the incumbent Prime Minister he would not yield to violence and would defend Japan's democracy. Moreover, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he would like to carry on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe, who elevated the Japan-Australia relationship to the "Special Strategic Partnership," and to strive to further strengthen the bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Albanese replied to Prime Minister Kishida that the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe will live on between them.
