Japan-Canada Summit Telephone Meeting

On July 13, commencing at 9:05 am, for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone meeting with the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. The overview of the talk is as follows.

1. At the outset, Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his condolences to the passing of former Prime Minister Abe on behalf of the people of Canada. Furthermore, Prime Minister Trudeau stated that his thoughts are with the Prime Minister and the people of Japan as they mourn this loss, noting that former Prime Minister Abe led the international community including FOIP and CPTPP as a dedicated and visionary leader, and deepened the Japan-Canada relations as a close friend of Canada.

2. In response, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Trudeau’s remarks and stated that the despicable act that took place in the midst of an election, the very foundation of democracy, is absolutely unacceptable. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that as the incumbent Prime Minister, he would not give in to violence and would defend democracy, and strive to further strengthen the Japan-Canada relations, carrying on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe who further developed the Japan-Canada relations.
