Japan-France Summit Telephone Talk

On July 12, commencing at 6:07 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, President Macron expressed his deep condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe and stated that France stands with Japan in this difficult moment. He also stated that former Prime Minister Abe made significant contribution to the enhancement of Japan-France relationship.

2. In response, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for President Macron’s remarks and stated that the despicable act that took place in the midst of an election, the very foundation of democracy, is absolutely unacceptable. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that as the incumbent Prime Minister, he would not give in to violence and would defend democracy, and strive to further strengthen the Japan-France relationship, carrying on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe.
