Courtesy Call on Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio by H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
On May 20, commencing at around 9:05 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Prime Minister KISHIDA welcomed Director General Grossi’s first visit to Japan in two years, stated that Japan highly appreciates the role played by the IAEA, and expressed his support for Director General Grossi's leadership in ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine. In response, Director General Grossi expressed his gratitude for the assistance from Japan to the activities of the IAEA and stated that the IAEA hopes for continued close cooperation with Japan.
2. Prime Minister KISHIDA stated that the continued scientific and objective review by the IAEA regarding the safety of the discharge of the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) treated water into the sea is a very important initiative for gaining an understanding for the public, both at home and abroad, and added that Japan remains committed to handle it in a transparent manner. In response, Director General Grossi stated that the IAEA will continue to cooperate with Japan.
3. With regard to the situation concerning the North Korean nuclear and missile issues, both sides agreed on the importance of cooperation between Japan and the IAEA.
