Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: I have a question regarding the Nobel Prize in Literature. Mr. Kazuo Ishiguro, a U.K. author of Japanese descent who was born in Nagasaki Prefecture and is living in London, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature yesterday. Can you please share your comments?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Firstly, I have been informed that Mr. Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki and moved to the United Kingdom at a young age. The Government of Japan wishes to extend its heartfelt congratulations and express its joy that an individual of Japanese descent who has succeeded in a foreign country in the face of a number of hardships, I would imagine, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Mr. Ishiguro’s works are admired by readers not only in the United Kingdom but also around the world. His works have many readers in Japan as well, and have been adapted for the stage and into a TV drama last year. We wish Mr. Ishiguro continued success.
