Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)
[Provisional Translation]
Q&As
(Abridged)
REPORTER: I have a question about the Panama Papers. Some media sources are reporting that an action plan that includes measures to address tax evasion and bolster enforcement capabilities might be adopted and announced at the Ise-Shima Summit at the end of this month. Please explain related facts and arrangements.
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: International collaboration to deal with this type of global tax evasion and related issues has already been taking place at G20 and OECD venues. We are still in the process of reviewing topics for discussion at the Summit. However, I expect the Anti-Corruption Summit being hosted by the United Kingdom on May 12 to discuss measures that address tax evasion and efforts to prevent corruption, and I believe that based on the content covered at the event on May 12 international discussions and responses on this matter will continue. Summit topics, meanwhile, are still under consideration.
REPORTER: I think Masahiko Shibayama, a Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, will attend the Anti-Corruption Summit, which you just mentioned, on behalf of Japan. What does Japan intend to express at the Anti-Corruption Summit?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: International tax evasion, money laundering, and other acts of corruption must be treated as a major issue, and steps need to be taken to prevent their occurrence.
