Opening Statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga
Yesterday we were delighted to hear that this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Professor Emeritus Satoshi Omura. Yesterday evening Prime Minister Abe telephoned Prof. Omura directly to convey his congratulations. This award recognizes the tremendous contribution from research outcomes by Japanese researchers in efforts to overcome infectious diseases in tropical regions. This award is a source of pride and also encouragement for the people of Japan. The Government will continue to provide strong support for the promotion of wide-ranging academic research, the development of human resources, and other efforts that will generate further results that inspire the next generation and lead to innovation.
