Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: I have a question regarding the logo of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Today, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games decided to cease use of the logo. Can you please share your comments regarding this?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: First of all, while I am aware of the news reports, I am not aware as to whether that was specifically decided or not. In any case, it was the Organising Committee and the International Olympic Committee that decided on the logo for the Tokyo Games. Amid the various comments being made about the logo, I understand that the Organising Committee will deal with the situation in an appropriate manner. The Government considers that the Tokyo Games must be an event that the Japanese people are proud of and receives their blessings. This has been the consistent view of the Prime Minister until now. At any rate, I expect that the Organising Committee will be making their decision in light of the various comments.
