REPORTER: I have a question concerning the Defense of Japan whitepaper. The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China has expressed strong dissatisfaction with regard to the new edition of the Defense of Japan whitepaper, stating that it creates artificial tensions by maliciously exaggerating the threat posed by China. What is the Government’s view of such opinions?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I am aware of the statement issued by the Ministry of National Defense of China. Each year the Defense of Japan whitepaper provides an introduction to the defense policies of Japan, including objective explanations and analysis concerning the security situation surrounding Japan, including Chinese military capabilities. In the new edition of the Defense of Japan whitepaper it is also noted that the Government expects China to recognize its responsibility in the international community, accept and comply with international norms, and play an active role in a more cooperative manner in regional and global issues. In addition, the Government is currently engaged in the necessary efforts to call for and promote various exchanges, cooperation, and dialogue with China in the areas of security and defense.
