Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: The G7 Summit in Germany came to a close. How do you assess the Summit, including Japan’s achievements?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: As the Prime Minister stated in his press conference last night, the G7 countries share fundamental values, such as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. This forms the foundation of our unity. The leaders of the countries were able to confirm that they stand united in dealing with the variety of issues the world is faced with. I believe this was of key importance.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Abe gained the leaders’ endorsement and support on Japan’s position presented by the Prime Minister: whether it be in Europe, Asia, or anywhere else around the world, we cannot accept unilateral changes to the status quo with force in the background. Japan attaches great importance to the rule of law as well as to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Next year, Japan will chair the G7 Summit. As the chair country, we will make steady efforts to ensure the success of next year’s Summit.

REPORTER: I have a question regarding President Putin’s visit to Japan. In the Government’s opinion, in light of the current situation, what circumstances must be established to bring the visit closer to realization?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: As the Prime Minister stated during the G7 Summit, as far as Japan is concerned, there is the Northern Territories issue which has remained unsettled for 70 years. The Prime Minister has gained the understanding of the respective leaders on the need for direct dialogue on this issue. As with the situation in Ukraine, the rule of law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity must be upheld. These matters were put forward during the Summit and were agreed upon among the leaders.

Therefore, given the situation, the Prime Minister will make a decision based on a comprehensive consideration, while creating suitable conditions between Japan and Russia.
