REPORTER: I have a question concerning your recent meeting with United States Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. How did you explain the current situation surrounding the relocation of Futenma Air Station to Henoko, and what views did Secretary Carter express concerning Henoko?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I met with United States Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter for about 20 minutes from 3:00 p.m. today. In the meeting, I referred to the Abe administration’s proactive contribution to peace and the development of security-related legislation. We also consulted each other about strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance through revision of the Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation. With regard to the realignment of U.S. Forces in Japan, including the relocation of Futenma Air Station, I explained the Government’s stance and requested cooperation towards alleviating the burden of bases on Okinawa, referring also to my recent visit to Okinawa Prefecture. Secretary Carter stated that the United States will continue to cooperate with regard to measures to alleviate the burden on Okinawa.
