Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

  • The position of the Ambassador of Japan to China

(Abridged)

REPORTER: I would like to ask a question concerning the Ambassador to China. Mr. Shinichi Nishimiya passed away some time ago but we have yet to have the next Ambassador to China appointed. In order to avoid the position of ambassador being left vacant, what action is the Government planning to take?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY FUJIMURA: As of September 11, the current Ambassador to China, Uichiro Niwa, has been ordered to return home. However, as we are yet to confirm the next ambassador, I have been informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the ministry is currently working to extend the scheduled return date, which was to be mid-October, by approximately one additional month.
