Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: The Prime Minister has just finished his policy speech. An impressive aspect of his speech this time was how he quoted the statements of several past Prime Ministers, including former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and former Prime Minister Taro Aso. What was his aim in using the words of past Prime Ministers?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY FUJIMURA: I believe that this was the part concerning the burden of social security and taxation. This issue is not a one which just recently emerged. Everyone also clearly understands the natural 1 trillion yen increase in that burden that takes place every year. In that regard, the situation now is the same as it was under the Liberal Democratic Party-New Komeito coalition government, and concerning this issue, our aims are also the same. I believe that the Prime Minister was making an appeal that we look beyond the boundaries of our respective positions and, holding discussions, work together for the sake of future generations. I was told that the Prime Minister mentioned this in a meeting with editorial writers and newspaper business section chiefs yesterday.
