Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: The Imperial Household Agency has announced that His Majesty The Emperor will be discharged from the hospital this afternoon. Currently, His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince is acting as a temporary replacement for the Emperor. Moving forward how does the Government intend to deal with this situation, including the form of a temporary replacement?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY FUJIMURA: This afternoon His Majesty The Emperor was discharged from the University of Tokyo Hospital. We were very concerned about his condition since he was hospitalized on November 6, so for now his discharge brings us great relief. I extend my deepest prayers for his early recovery as he continues to receive treatment, but the current situation does not allow us to make an immediate decision concerning his temporary replacement. I have been told that the Imperial Household Agency's announcement indicates that he will be excused from public duty until the end of this month.
