Opening Statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY FUJIMURA:Today, as this is a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, I would like to provide an overview of the meeting. Thirty-one items including general items, as well as government ordinances and personnel decisions were approved. From the ministers, Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Kawabata reported on the findings of the Labour Force Survey and the findings of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey. Prime Minister Noda made a statement on the senior vice-ministers and parliamentary secretaries who will support the ministers in charge of matters such as the abduction issue, ocean policy, postal reform, and regional revitalization. He also made a statement on the acting minister while the minister is away on overseas trips.

At the gathering of ministers that followed, Minister Renho discussed the implementation of scrutinizing the reconstruction-related programs.

REPORTER:This morning, before the Cabinet meeting, sometime after 9am, there was a gathering of quite a large number of Cabinet members. Was some kind of event being held before the Cabinet meeting?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY FUJIMURA:The meeting that preceded the Cabinet meeting today was an exchange of views among the Cabinet members regarding the initial responses and so on during an emergency. The Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary for Crisis Management gave a lecture which assumed a variety of emergency scenarios. An exchange of views also took place.

REPORTER:It seemed that Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Maeda was not present at today's Cabinet meeting. What is the reason for that?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY FUJIMURA:Two people were absent at today's Cabinet meeting, Minister of State for Disaster Management Hirano and Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Maeda. Both flew today to the areas hit by Typhoon No. 12 in Wakayama and Nara.
