Obuchi signed the Ottawa Convention on banning antipersonnel landmines on December 3, 1997, while serving as foreign minister. Before the signing, he appealed for many countries to endorse the treaty and announced that Japan would extend support for efforts to remove landmines and aid those injured by them. |
