Statement by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
(On the demise of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamatsu)

December 18, 2004

I cannot help but express deep sadness upon hearing of the demise of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamatsu.

Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamatsu always gave great support to His Imperial Highness Prince Takamatsu during their marriage and made wide ranging contribution in such fields as medicine, welfare, culture, sports and international goodwill. Notably, she had made devoted efforts in activities towards the eradication of cancer.

Even after the passing of His Imperial Highness Prince Takamatsu, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamatsu carried on her husband's wishes in the same spirit and closely communicated with the people of Japan by attending various commemorative events and competitions where she extended encouraging words to the participants and persons concerned. She also shared her feelings and thoughts with the people through her publications.

The people of Japan held deep respect for the unpretentious personality of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamatsu and sincerely wished to see her in good health again. The passing of Her Imperial Highness has thus caused truly inconsolable grief.

Extending my deepest sympathy to the members of the Imperial Family and other relatives of Princess Takamatsu, together with the people of Japan, I hereby would like to express my heartfelt condolences.
