Message from Premier Zhui Rongji to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi

29 September 2002, Beijing

H.E.Mr. Junichiro Koizumi
Prime Minister of Japan

Your Excellency,

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-China relations, on behalf of the Government and people of the People's Republic of China, I would like to convey my heartfelt greetings to Your Excellency and by so doing, to the Government and people of Japan.

Thirty years ago today our esteemed political predecessors together went forward with a historic resolution to bring about the normalization of relations between our two countries, opening a new chapter in our relations. During these 30 years, through the common efforts of both the governments and the peoples of our countries, great strides have been achieved in the development of our bilateral relations, bringing significant benefit to our peoples. Moreover, our countries have actively contributed to the peace, stability and development of the region and of the world.

China and Japan are important neighbors, and in the new international situation of the twenty-first century, it is of great significance that our countries continue to develop long-term stable, good-neighborly, cooperative relations, and the path ahead lies wide open before us. From the bottom of my heart I hope that we will both seize the opportunity of the thirtieth anniversary of the normalization of relations, in accordance with the spirit of "taking history as a mirror and looking toward the future" and guided by the principles of the Japan-China Joint Communique, The Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People's Republic of China and the Japan-China Joint Declaration, to further greatly develop the relationship between our two countries.

Zhu Rongji
Premier of the State Council
of the People's Republic of China
