Comment by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on the Launch of the new WTO (World Trade Organization) Round at the WTO Ministerial Conference in Doha, Qatar

November 15, 2001

1. I welcome the launch of the new multilateral trade negotiations (New Round) under the WTO. The New Round bears particular significance in strengthening the multilateral trading system as well as in providing vigor and stability to the world economy, as its prospect has become increasingly uncertain.

2. The New Round of negotiations aims at not only liberalizing trade but also clarifying, improving and extending trade rules, including those on anti-dumping measures. I note with satisfaction that Japan's views have been reflected in the declaration for the most part, including on agriculture. I also welcome the accession of China and Chinese Taipei to the WTO.

3. The Government of Japan intends to actively engage in the New Round of negotiations in order to further liberalize world trade and to strengthen WTO rules, while taking into account the interests and concerns expressed by developing countries.
