Advanced Information and Telecommunications Society Promotion
Headquarters Issues Y2K Guidelines

The government's Advanced Information and Telecommunications Society Promotion Headquarters, headed by Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, met at the Prime Minister's Official Residence and officially decided on guidelines for the public in relation to the so-called Y2K problem. The government believes that there is little likelihood that the Y2K problem will significantly disrupt daily life but advised people to make sure they have extra food, drinking water, and medicine on hand in case of an emergency. In his message the Prime Minister said that while he did not believe that the Y2K problem would disrupt vital services or otherwise have a serious impact on social infrastructure, it was important for everyone to take precautions just to be on the safe side.
