(Prime Minister Takaichi)
On the occasion of the FY2026 Memorial Service for Members of the Self-Defense Forces Who Lost Their Lives on Duty, I hereby offer my deepest respects and heartfelt condolences to the souls of the SDF personnel who lost their lives in the performance of their noble duties, which are essential to the very existence of our nation.
Today, we honor the souls of 16 additional SDF personnel who have been newly enshrined here.
Amid the most severe and complex security environment since the end of World War II, SDF personnel are working tirelessly, day and night, at their respective posts to fulfill their most important mission to defend Japan in order to protect its peace and independence and maintain national security.
Those we have honored today, along with many others before them, devoted themselves wholeheartedly to fulfilling their duties and lost their lives in the line of duty.
When I think of the profound grief of the bereaved families who have lost their irreplaceable loved ones, my heart is truly filled with sorrow.
The dedication of these personnel, who fulfilled their missions with unwavering resolve as members of the SDF until the very end, is a source of pride for our nation.
The loss of such capable and dedicated personnel is an immense loss both to the SDF and to Japan as a whole.
Once again, I express my deepest respect and gratitude to the souls of the 2,158 personnel enshrined here.
As Commander-in-Chief of the SDF, I hereby solemnly pledge that we will honor their noble sacrifices, carry forward their aspirations, and devote our utmost efforts to protecting the lives and peaceful daily existence of the Japanese people.
Once again, I pray from the bottom of my heart that their souls may rest in peace, and that their bereaved families may enjoy peace of mind and lasting good health.
