On August 9, 2026, Prime Minister TAKAICHI attended the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony held at Peace Park in Nagasaki City.
The ceremony, held on the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing, was attended by approximately 2,600 people, including atomic bomb survivors and bereaved family members, as well as representatives of international organizations, including the United Nations, and representatives from 98 countries and the European Union (EU), who prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and for lasting world peace.
At the ceremony, Mr. SUZUKI Shiro, Mayor of the City of Nagasaki, a representative of the bereaved families, and a representative of the atomic bomb survivors dedicated the names of those whose deaths as victims of the atomic bombing had been newly confirmed over the past year. Representatives of the bereaved families, atomic bomb survivors, and elementary, junior high, and high school students then offered water. Following floral tributes by representatives of the bereaved families, representatives of the atomic bomb survivors, Prime Minister TAKAICHI, and others, all participants observed a one-minute moment of silence at 11:02 a.m., the exact time the atomic bomb was dropped.
Next, after Mayor Suzuki delivered the Peace Declaration and a representative of the atomic bomb survivors recited the Promise for Peace, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her heartfelt prayers for the repose of the souls of the victims and delivered an address.
Following the ceremony, Prime Minister TAKAICHI visited the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. She then moved to a hotel in the city to attend a meeting with representatives of atomic bomb survivors' organizations and received requests from representatives of seven organizations. She then spoke to the press. Afterwards, she visited residents in Megumi-no-Oka Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Home, a nursing home for atomic bomb survivors, in the city.
