Japan-Indonesia Summit Meeting

[Provisional translation]

On March 31, 2026, Prime Minister Takaichi held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, at the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace.

Following a salute and guard of honor ceremony, the two leaders held a meeting, followed by a joint press occasion. Finally, they held a working lunch.

At the joint press occasion, the Prime Minister stated as follows:

“First, I would like to extend my heartfelt welcome to President Prabowo on his visit to Japan. Japan and Indonesia are Comprehensive and Strategic Partners that have built a long-standing relationship of friendship over many years.

As the international situation grows increasingly severe, cooperation with Indonesia, located at the juncture of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is of utmost importance for realizing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). From this perspective, it was highly meaningful that President Prabowo and I were able today to engage in thorough discussions across a wide range of fields and confirm our cooperative relationship to make the region stronger and more prosperous.

At the meeting earlier, President Prabowo and I agreed to advance concrete cooperation in the economic and security fields in order to support Indonesia’s proactive efforts to strengthen its national resilience.

First, in the economic field, we confirmed continued support for Indonesia’s industrial development and cooperation in human resource development, including in the field of AI (artificial intelligence). Next, as both countries are maritime nations and prone to natural disasters, we agreed to strengthen maritime cooperation, including the promotion of the fisheries industry, as well as disaster management cooperation, including flood control measures.

In addition, in light of the situation surrounding Iran, the importance of resource and energy security is being reaffirmed globally. Indonesia is a major resource-rich country, and this month, our two countries signed Memoranda of Cooperation regarding critical minerals and nuclear energy.

I also agreed with President Prabowo to further advance our cooperation under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC).

In the security field, we agreed to further strengthen cooperation in maritime security through support for the Indonesian navy under Official Security Assistance (OSA) and efforts to enhance the capabilities of maritime law enforcement agency. In addition, I welcome the progress of the discussion towards making a Defense Cooperation Arrangement between the defense authorities since last year’s “2+2” meeting. Through these efforts, we intend to further contribute together to peace and stability in the region and the international community.

On regional and international affairs, we exchanged views not only on the situation in the Middle East, including Iran, but also on the South China Sea and our responses to North Korea, including its nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue. In particular, with regard to the situation in the Middle East, we confirmed that our two countries will work closely together, including from the perspective of energy security.

In 2028, our two countries will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The friendly relationship between our two countries is also supported by people-to-people exchanges. On the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, which has suffered devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in the past, memorial ceremonies for the Great East Japan Earthquake are held every year. This is something we deeply appreciate.

Taking the opportunity of this summit meeting, we will further enhance communication between our two countries and further develop our Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership, which is underpinned by bonds of heart-to-heart connection. Terima kasih (thank you).”
