Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Opening Statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga
(There were statements on the overview of the Cabinet meeting and on the ministerial discussions following the Cabinet meeting, and others.)

Today, following the deliberations and approval given at the 9-Minister Meeting of the National Security Council, it was decided at the Cabinet meeting that the Implementation Plans for International Peace Cooperation Assignments for South Sudan would be revised, among other relevant decisions. This revision will extend the duration of the term of the Headquarters staff personnel dispatched from the Self-Defense Forces to the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) by three months. Peace and stability in South Sudan is a critical issue for the international community. The Government of Japan, as a responsible member of the international community, considers it extremely significant to continue to coordinate with various countries to provide supports to South Sudan.

Q&As

REPORTER: I have a question concerning the extension of the dispatch period for UNMISS, which you have just mentioned. If I may confirm with you, I understand that there are currently four staff personnel who are dispatched. Is my understanding correct that the three-month extension has been decided for these personnel?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: The dispatch period will be extended for the personnel who are dispatched currently.
