Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary

December 21, 2015 (AM)

Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: According to some press reports, representatives of the Government of Japan and the Government of North Korea met in China on three occasions from late November to mid-December for unofficial consultations concerning the reinvestigation by North Korea of the abduction of Japanese nationals. Could you tell us the facts behind these press reports?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I am aware of the press reports; however, I would like to refrain from making any specific comment. In any event, what is important is that North Korea implement in good faith the agreement reached between Japan and North Korea, and that all the abduction victims be returned to Japan as soon as possible. The Government will continue to make every effort in the negotiations with North Korea and seek to achieve the swift resolution of the abduction issue based on the principles of “dialogue and pressure” and “action for action.”

REPORTER: I have a related question. North Korea has still not provided any notification concerning the results of the reinvestigation. What is the current status, and are there any prospects for receiving the results?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I would like to reiterate what I just stated, namely that the Government will continue to make every effort in the negotiations with North Korea and seek to achieve the swift resolution of the abduction issue based on the principles of “dialogue and pressure” and “action for action.”
