CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Japan and Belgium, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2016, will organize a variety of events in the two countries to celebrate the year as “150 Years of Friendship between Japan and Belgium.” In view of the relationship between the two countries, the relationship between the Imperial Family and the Belgium Royal Family, and international goodwill, His Majesty the Emperor of Japan will assume the honorary presidency on the Japanese side with a view to realizing a successful “150 Years of Friendship between Japan and Belgium.” The presidency will last from December 1, 2015 to December 31, 2016. I have been informed that on the Belgian side, His Majesty King Philippe, King of the Belgians, will assume the honorary presidency from the same date, December 1, 2015. To celebrate the 150th anniversary, both the private and public sectors are currently planning to organize memorial events in a wide range of areas, including politics, economy, culture, and education. Through these events, it is expected that Japan and Belgium will deepen their mutual understanding, which will lead to the further enhancement of their bilateral ties.
