Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary

May 22, 2015 (AM)

Press Conference by the Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

(Abridged)

REPORTER: I have a question concerning Japan-Russia relations. In a press conference yesterday Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel stated that he is confident that the Japanese Government is committed to the principle of not pursuing business as usual with Russia under the current circumstances in Ukraine. He essentially indicated that the thinking of the United States is that given the circumstances in Ukraine, now is not the time to pursue normal relations. What are the views of the Government with regard to this statement?

DEPUTY CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY KATO: I am not aware of the details of the statement made by Assistant Secretary Russel. However, based on the principle that this serious violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be ignored by the Government of Japan, which attaches importance to the rule of law, we have to date responded appropriately, while attaching importance to the solidarity of the G7, and will continue to do so. At the same time, neither is there any change in the Government’s policy of maintaining political dialogue with Russia in order to contribute to Japan’s interests. We will continue to respond in accordance with each of these policies.
