Under the present Constitution of Japan, the Prime Minister is designated from among the members of the Diet by a resolution of the Diet. In recognition of the utmost importance of expanding the political participation of Japanese people, the first meeting of the Advisory Council to Consider the Direct Election of the Prime Minister was held on July 13, 2001 in order to conduct wide-ranging discussion on the modalities of the relationship between the Prime Minister and the people, including the constitutional issues, and to formulate specific proposals. The Council is expected to summarize the debates over approximately one year. |
