Japan-Indonesia Summit Meeting (Summary)

On Tuesday, September 25, Mr. Yoshihiko Noda, the Prime Minister of Japan, who was visiting New York, the United States of America, to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a Japan-Indonesia summit meeting with H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, for approximately 20 minutes from around after noon (September 26, 01:00 a.m. Japan Time). The overview of the meeting is as follows (Attending from the Indonesian side : H.E. Ir. M. Hatta Rajasa, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, H.E. Sudi Silalahi, State Secretary, and H.E. Dr. R. M. Marty Nalalegawa, Minister for Foreign Affairs. Attending from the Japanese side: Mr. Hiroyuki Nagahama, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Akihisa Nagashima, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, and Mr. Kazuhide Ishikawa, Director-General of the Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department):

  1. Introduction

    (1) Prime Minister Noda welcomed close high-level communication between the two countries, such as the summit meeting in June in Los Cabos and the visit to Japan by Mr. Djoko Suyanto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Moreover, both leaders shared views on the recognition that the roles of the "strategic partnership" between the two countries for stability and prosperity of the region has been increasing. Both leaders also shared views on working together for  regional and international issues.

    (2) Furthermore, Prime Minister Noda mentioned that in response to the accident in which a Japanese fishing boat collided with a cargo vessel off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture on September 24 and 13 crew members of the fishing boat including one Indonesian trainee has been missing, the Government of Japan had been committed in the search for the missing crew members, he hoped everyone was safe. In response, President Yudhoyono expressed his gratitude.

  2. Regional issues

    (1) Concerning the ASEAN-related summit meetings, Prime Minister Noda paid his respect for the tremendous leadership of President Yudhoyono which was exhibited as the chairperson last year, and both leaders confirmed their coordination for the East Asia Summit (EAS) to be held in November in Phnom Penh so that good results will be obtained. Moreover, both leaders also confirmed cooperation toward next year's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in which Indonesia will serve as the chair.

    (2) In addition, while both leaders discussed the reform of the United Nations Security Council, Prime Minister Noda explained Japan's stance concerning current Japan-China relations.
