On Thursday, June 7, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for around 20 minutes, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Ashour Saad Ben Khaial, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Libya, who is visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the beginning of the meeting, Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura welcomed Minister Ben Khaial's visit to Japan, the first visit to Japan by a Libyan foreign affairs minister in 27 years, and praised Libya's steady progress in nation building. He also said that Japan wanted to continue to strengthen ties with the new Government and that Japan would be supporting Libya's nation building initiatives, beginning with personnel training in areas such as prosthetic limbs. Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura also expressed expectations toward the transitional Government's efforts to hold a Constitutional Assembly election, scheduled to take place this month, in a peaceful and successful manner.

  2. In response, Minister Ben Khaial expressed his gratitude for Japan's prompt support during the revolution in Libya last year, and Japan's humanitarian and reform support after the civil war ended.

  3. Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura and Minister Ben Khaial confirmed that Japanese companies are currently steadily resuming their activities in Libya as a result of a government-private sector joint economic mission dispatched to Libya in January this year, and confirmed that they will work together to encourage active investments to Libya by Japanese companies in the future.
