Order of Culture Presented at Imperial Palace

The Order of Culture was presented to six people in a ceremony in the Matsu no Ma hall of the Imperial Palace on Culture Day. Those honored received the order from His Majesty the Emperor and the patent of decoration from Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori. Honored were Tadao Ishikawa for contemporary Chinese studies, Fukuko Okubo for leathercraft, Hideki Shirakawa for materials science (he also received the 2000 Nobel Prize for chemistry), calligrapher Kason Sugioka for kana calligraphy(Japanese syllabary), Ryoji Noyori for organic chemistry, and Isuzu Yamada for stage and film acting.

Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Ryoko Tamura Presented with Prime Minister's Award

Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori presented judoka Ryoko Tamura with the Prime Minister's Award in a ceremony at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The award recognized her great contribution to furthering sports in Japan, including four successive victories in the World Judo Championships, a gold medal in the 48-kilogram class in women's judo at the Olympic Games in Sydney in September, and many other superb accomplishments in judo. Upon receiving the award Tamura said, "I am very happy at this great honor, which I owe to the support of people throughout Japan. I want to try for a fifth successive victory in the world Judo Championship next year, something no one has accomplished so far."

Prime Minister Meets with President Nakamura of Palau

Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori met with President Kuniwo Nakamura of the Republic of Palau for about 45 minutes at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The Prime Minister promised to grant aid for the construction of an international airport and a bridge linking the capital, Koror, with the largest island, Babelthuap. President Nakamura said he intended to name the bridge the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge.
