The contestants represented 15 high schools on the northern island of Hokkaido. First prize (the Minister of Foreign Affairs Prize) was awarded to Ryoko Shima, a first-year student at Hokkai High School, while second prize (the Governor of Hokkaido Prize) went to Mizuho Goto, a second-year student at Nemuro High School.
