Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori visited Miyakejima, an island under the jurisdiction of Metropolitan Tokyo, all of whose inhabitants have been evacuated because of continued volcanic action, to appraise the damage firsthand. After touring the island the Prime Minister visited the branch government office, where Tokyo Vice-Governor Yasushi Aoyama and Miyake Village Mayor Ko Hasegawa briefed him on the extent of the damage, conveyed their requests to the central government, and discussed restoration initiatives with the Prime Minister.
