New System of One Cabinet Office
and 12 Ministries Inaugurated

Marking the start of the new system of one Cabinet Office and 12 ministries, Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori took part in the ceremony held in front of the former Prime Minister's Office to unveil the new "Cabinet Secretariat" and "Cabinet Office" plaques. Among those in attendance were Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda and Minister of State Ryutaro Hashimoto (administrative reform, Okinawa and Northern Territories affairs). The Prime Minister released a statement declaring, "The central government reform is aimed at the 'rebirth of government,' with the state taking the lead in reforming itself so that it can recover comprehensiveness and responsiveness in affairs of state from the standpoint of the people and perform the inherent role of the state. To make this reform truly meaningful, we must imbue the new organization of one Cabinet Office and 12 ministries with the spirit of 'administration that puts the people first,' which is the reform's principal objective."
