Memorandum on Cooperation in the Field of Science and Technology
between Japan and the Federative Republic of Brazil

Tokyo, May 26, 2005


1.Prime Minister of Japan, Junichiro Koizumi, and President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (hereinafter referred to as "Both Leaders") reached common view that cooperation and exchange between the two countries in the field of science and technology can be developed further.
2.In this regard, Both Leaders shared the common recognition that it is appropriate to revitalize cooperation under the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil on Co-operation in the Field of Science and Technology entered into force in 1985.
3.Both Leaders, taking account of a possibility of holding a joint committee in the future, expressed their intention of coordinating hereafter to find concrete areas of cooperation between the two countries, and referred to biomass, biotechnology and nanotechnology, as areas of example in which both sides have particular interests.
4.Both Leaders expressed their expectation that cooperation in the field of science and technology between the two countries will be advanced through exchanges between officials and related entities of both countries, sending of missions, and by conducting seminars, among other means.
5.Both Leaders welcomed that both sides confirmed their intention to promote exchange of information on research activities related to the field of science and technology by taking necessary measures to further utilize the directory databases available for both countries and expressed their expectation that with such effort, researchers of the two countries can mutually have access to the beneficial information provided by each country and as a consequence, bilateral cooperation on science and technology will develop.
